Happy reading!

INPUT
last update we asked for your input. we had a number of responses; the two Media Democracy Day T-shirt winners are Mahdi and Carol. here are the ideas for what we might want to focus on – it may be a good idea to have a meeting sometime soon too. if you’ve got any more thoughts please do not hesitate to contact us!
.1. Push against the myth of humanitarian intervention that the media is being used to disseminate. For example, Sudan is in the cross-hairs. There is a humanitarian problem there, but the claims of genocide are totally false. The “usually characters” that are crying foul about Darfur are actually the ones funding and arming the fighting.
.2. Work to educate the public about “the Ottawa Declaration on Haiti” which is a matter of public record that our government helped coordinate the ousting of Haiti’s democratically-elected government. ALmost the entire Haitian community knows this. If we work to debunk media misinformation in regards to Haiti we will get a lot of support from a wide coalition of people. The Haitian community is very active and it would probably build us a lot of bridges. It is well documented too.
.3. Setup some sort of study or forum on the cuts for public broadcasting and the push towards privatization. Why is it being done? Privately owned media has always been very good at filtering the news and much better at doing it than state owned media. In fact in most countries the TV channels are affiliated exclusively by a political party or elite group. This is a very important topic. We could set up a study, fact finding mission, work with the CBC (not for them), then compile are practical findings into an analyses — some of it will be boring and some of it wont — and then based on this set up a strategy to warn the general public, setup protests, and build an information campaign. It might sound removed from reclaiming media space, independent media and activism, but its the building blocks for complete activism! Making CBC and Radio-Canada truly independent too are also important.
.4. Looking at ways at not only developing alternative media, but pushing the alternative media and views in the mainstream media. Bringing anarchy to them!
.5. Working on studying underground media, like the type the French Resistance use to secretly print or the African Congress Party use to print during the Apartheid-era in South Africa. This is very important, cause you never know what tomorrow will bring. The civil liberties we take for granted can disappear any minute. No one thought that Trudeau would send the military into Quebec during the FLQ Crisis, but it happened.
.6. Public talks, panel debates and films (e.g. I loved “a little bit of so much truth” through Cinema Politica).
.7. I’m less interested these days in the idea of independent media as giving everyone their own microphone (the internet does a good job of that through blogs etc) than I am in finding and making high quality independent media that’s well researched and communicated. It can still include personal stories, absolutely. But they should be framed in a way that shows real engagement with and understanding of the issues involved. There’s a lot of unsubstantiated ranting on both left and right; both undermine the messages they’re trying to promote.

a warm earth day greeting to you all,
so the Media Reclamation Project aka Media Matters stands at a bit of a crossroads: we need to let OPIRG/GRIPO-Ottawa know by the end of the month if we plan to continue doing stuff. we haven’t really done much, not even have a meeting, since our Media Democracy Day event in October
so, we’re asking you now, to give us some input: what can you see us doing in the next year? do you want to get involved? where would we be most effective in directing our efforts?
please email us with a response if you’ve got something to share.
and to reward you for participating, we have two t-shirts (size ‘m’ in red) from Toronto’s Media Democracy Day event, that we’ll give away to two people who respond
if you don’t have any ideas for the future, you can still get a chance at a t-shirt by emailing us with some feedback on one or more things you’ve learned from our sendouts and/or events in the past
!! PLEASE DO RESPOND !!

and in addition to that, we’ve got a lot of content for you today, to keep you informed and inspired on media issues and activism

Help save the CBC March 27, 2009

The government has announced it is cutting jobs and programs at the CBC. Lots of them.
Here is a campaign from Avaaz.org to raise a public outcry and get support – not cuts – for CBC. Sign up and spread the word if you feel the same way!
http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_cbc/
Here’s some of what they’re saying:
Dear friends,
| Our government is forcing the CBC to drastically cut 800 staff and programming. We urgently need a massive public outcry to Save the CBC: |
Canada’s media networks have all been slammed by the recession. But the government is reportedly considering bailouts for its friends at private companies CTV and CanWest, while forcing the CBC to drastically cut 800 staff and programming.
Our CBC is a national treasure, and a pillar of public-interest journalism in a country whose media is owned by a few large firms. We won’t hear an outcry from their media outlets, and the CBC is too principled to use its megaphone to make the case for itself. We are the only voice the CBC has.
We urgently need a massive public outcry to Save the CBC, click below to sign the petition. The government is weak and falling in the polls and enough outrage can make the difference. Parliamentarians have promised to deliver the petition directly in the House of Commons, and we’ll even fly a plane and banner over Parliament Hill with the message! Sign now, and forward this email to everyone who might care about this:

Love is in the air. Scroll down to see more.
But first:
- if you are a University of Ottawa student (or maybe even if you’re not) and want to learn some journalism, the English student newspaper – The Fulcrum – is offering training sessions at 1:00pm on most Fridays, from now all through March. For more info, give them a call 613-562-5261 or http://www.thefulcrum.ca (their offices are located directly below the OPIRG/GRIPO-Ottawa office, 631 King Edward).
And second:
we’ve got some ‘oldies but goodies’ for you. these are three interviews done by Derrick Jensen, on different topics related to media. keep this email for when you’ve got some reading time, and when you do check out these links:
1998: George Gerbner, on ‘Telling Stories and Television’

1999: John Stauber, on ‘The Secret Battle for the American Mind’

2000: Robert McChesney, on ‘Free Press For Sale’

…
And now for the love:
(‘a message from our sponsors’ **)
The season of love is upon us.
We know the open Internet, with all it’s innovative services, is the real love of your life. So why not go ahead and show how much you care, make the Internet your Valentine this year.
Show you love for the Internet:
1. If you haven’t already, send a comment to the CRTC urging them to save your Internet/valentine: http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/crtc_submission
2. Watch and share THIS video prepared by SaveOurNet.ca: http://saveournet.ca/content/love
3. Set your Facebook status, Twitter status or email signature to: “I heart the Internet: http://saveournet.ca“
4. Email 3 of your friends and tell them to Save Our Net:
http://www.unionvoice.org/your_media/join-forward.tcl?domain=your_media&r=_pqAbqFqfy_3
Maybe you have your own way to express your love for the Internet – send your expressions and ideas to saveournetcanada@gmail.com
Don’t be shy now…
Love the Internet at: http://SaveOurNet.ca
~~~~~~~
** no, the Media Reclamation Project doesn’t actually have sponsors (other than OPIRG/GRIPO-Ottawa) but there are other organizations and initiatives that have similar priorities, and we like to pass on stuff from them
~~~~~~~
and here’s one more message from Steve Anderson, who sent us the previous SaveOurNet message:
SAVE ONLINE FREE SPEECH
We have helped propel Net Neutrality from an obscure issue into a national effort to secure open and equal access to the Internet for all Canadians. NOW is the time to let the CRTC know where YOU stand on Internet freedom: http://www.unionvoice.org/ct/n7qAbqF1iPFM/
Your submissions to the CRTC will be considered in the “traffic management” hearings held later this year. Please take a few
seconds to send your comments to the CRTC before the February 16th deadline: http://www.unionvoice.org/ct/n7qAbqF1iPFM/
We must convince the CRTC to stop big telecoms from controlling our access to the Internet. Bell, Rogers and other large ISPs cannot be allowed to continue serving their own interests by “throttling” Internet traffic.
The decisions made by the CRTC will signal Canada’s digital destiny. Your submission could make the difference in whether we have a closed gatekeeper Internet or open online access and innovation.
Remember that you must make your submission before Feb. 16. Please take a few seconds to tell the CRTC that you alone should
control your Internet surfing. http://www.unionvoice.org/ct/n7qAbqF1iPFM/
We’ve come this far; it’s time to stop Internet throttling for good!

Welcome to the New Year
Things have really erupted in Gaza, where Israel has launched an attack on the densely-packed, sealed-in population of 1.5 million.
Here is a commentary piece by Robert Fisk about the Israeli policy of keeping reporters out of Gaza:
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/01/05-6
You may recall that in January of 2008, Speaker George Rishmawi, founder of the International Middle East Media Center (IMEMC), visited Ottawa and spoke at Carleton University. IMEMC is a media center developed in collaboration between Palestinian and International journalists to provide independent media coverage of Israel-Palestine. You can follow detailed coverage of the Israeli assault on Gaza at the IMEMC website:
http://imemc.org
As you will find upon visiting the site, the IMEMC is one of many worthy media projects requiring funding from individual donations to stay in operation. Another such project is The Real News Network (TRNN), at:
http://therealnews.com
The Real News Network also has coverage of what is happening in Israel-Gaza, as well as of other situations.
One such TRNN video is of the situation in Greece, a report produced by a media activist with Ottawa Indymedia ties, Jesse Freeston:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cknzlqQvDzs
Another TRNN video reports on the situation in Barriere Lake, 3 hours North of Ottawa. This report was put together by Lia Tarachansky, another activist with Ottawa Indymedia ties:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jD13jXHUPI&feature=channel_page
** Note: On Wed Jan 7, there is a demo in support of the Barriere Lake community and specifically to demand the freedom of traditionally selected chief Benjamin Nottoway, who you can see being arrested in Lia’s video. The demonstration takes place at 12 noon at the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada in Hull/Gatineau, and then march to the Hull detention centre where Nottaway is being held prisoner; the demo will feature speakers from the Barriere Lake community, as well as Elizabeth May, NDP parliamentarians, union leaders, and representatives of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation. More info at: http://ottawa.indymedia.org/en/2008/12/8677.shtml
And last but not least, the latest edition of the Linchpin paper is now out. You can find the paper online at www.linchpin.ca, or:
http://linchpin.ca/collections+/+Anarchist-movement+/+Linchpin-Issue-7
It features an article by Media Reclamation Project activist Greg Macdougall, on the topic of Environmental Justice, based on content from the Organizing For Justice conference held in November:

Media Reclamation Project, update #1 November 19, 2008
Posted by mediamattersottawa in Uncategorized.add a comment
Welcome to the media activism update #1, courtesy of the newly-named Media Reclamation Project (that’s us!)
First, the Nov 20-22 Organizing For Justice conference is looking for reporters and note-takers to document their conference, particularly the slew of workshops lined up for Sat Nov 22. The conference is free or by donation, and all events are open to all ages. Childcare is available, accomodations for special needs are made or at least attempted, and you are welcome even if you aren’t going to be part of the documentation efforts. For more, see http://org4justice.wordpress.com
Second, people have been amazed at the headlines and articles featured in ‘the NY Times’ these days (or should we say in 2009? :) see http://www.nytimes-se.com/
Thirdly, Rabble.ca has relaunched their website. Check it out: http://rabble.ca
Fourth, American Public Media, the largest operator of public radio stations in the States, has put out an interactive game that allows you to play president and see if you can balance the U.S. budget: http://marketplace.publicradio.org/features/budget_hero ** Hint: if you can’t seem to balance your budget, click on ‘taxes’ and try repealing the Bush tax cuts.
Fifthly, here’s an awesome article on the history of independent media and what it can teach us for today’s media activists: http://www.counterpunch.org/cohen11132008.html
Last, but not least, we wanted to inform you of a big story that you might not have heard of if you weren’t plugged in to the right channels. The Globe and Mail’s Margaret Wente wrote a very troubling column defending – and going beyond – Dick Pound’s comments where he called Native people ’savages’; Dick Pound has since apologized, but Wente hasn’t, and the Globe and Mail issued a statement defending her statements. A Facebook group was started almost immediately after the publication of her column, calling for her firing, and over 3000 people are now members of that group. The group’s initiators continue to suggest ‘actions of the day’ to keep the heat on the G&M editors and management: the latest is to contact G&M editor Edward Greenspon and ask him: what the Globe’s official policy is with regard to printing hate speech. Do they tolerate it in certain instances? What kind of hate is not acceptable in their pages? Do they have any plans to change this policy? … and then to post any responses to the Facebook group page.

Media Democracy Day in Ottawa – Oct 16
Poster for Oct16 1/4-page flyer for Oct16
Two local independent media / activism groups will be celebrating Media Democracy Day this year with a public event on Thurs Oct 16 at 7pm. This will take place in room 359 of Fauteux Hall at the University of Ottawa.
The event will feature two speakers, Joanne St. Lewis and Greg Macdougall, as well as the showing of a short film entitled ‘The Indypendent’ by Amy Wolf.
